App Redesign
Geocaching is an outdoor game platform designed to bring users outdoors in search of caches hidden all across the world. The game has a long history dating back to the early 2000s.
In recent years the mobile app has fallen out of favor with many of the users, due to poor support, technical issues, outdated UX/UI and over-monitezation.

Research
Before approaching design it was important to understand the current problems that users are experiencing. I collected user feedback from both the Apple Store and Google Play. A pattern of issues emerged.
I then performed design audits to reveal where the issues are occurring and to build a fuller picture with additional problems that haven't been mentioned by users.
Since it became clear that the app would need restructuring efforts I tested it on a group of users and composed a heat map revealing the key sections.

Design System
The original app suffered both from an outdated look as well as some inconsistencies between buttons, menus and icons. Certain screens would feature too many choices that were visually similar, which would create confusion.
I created new color, font and component systems to insure a clear and consistent user interface that is flexible and scalable.

Community Focus
Based on all the user feedback it is clear that the heavy advertisement and blocking basic features behind pay walls, does more harm than good. It destabilizes the community and prevents new users from entering the space.
My approach was to design a clean, full-featured experience that will nurture the community and in return they can help by donating and become a supporter.

Profile
Since Geocaching is, in its essence, a game, the profile experience has been gamified further by revamping the statistics to include a leveling system.
Adding milestone and supporter badges for those who choose to donate can increase the users feeling of ownership and responsibility.
Finally adding collectible and exclusive backgrounds allow the user to further customize their profile.
Lists
The lists are now available for everyone and have added features like having the option to track progress. Additionally the user can search and follow public lists from other users. This allows some users to establish themselves as the expert or guide in a certain location.

Donation
Geocaching was historically always a free hobby accessible to every one. The introduction of premium was in direct contradiction with everything established before and it creates constant tension in the community.
My proposed product design relies on donations and rewarding the user by making them feel like a bigger part of the community. Simple donation CTO's can appear at regular intervals.
Dark Mode
Adding dark mode is not an essential feature, but it further reinforces the sense of the user being first priority. A small detail that helps solidify Geocaching as the leading platform for the game.
